аĿª½±Midlands Regional Meeting & Workshop 2023
The regional meeting on Monday 27 March 2023 will consists of three talks, by Viveka Erlandsson (Bristol University), Michael Magee (Durham University) and Mark Pollicott (Warwick University).
The lectures are aimed at a general mathematical audience. All interested, whether аĿª½±members or not, are most welcome to attend this event.
This day meeting takes place during the аĿª½±Workshop on Ergodic Theory of Group Extensions from 27-30 March 2023.

Travel Funding for Research Students and аĿª½±Members: There are limited funds available to contribute in part to the expenses of members of the London Mathematical Society or research students registered at UK universities to attend the meeting and workshop. Please email Richard Sharp at R.J.Sharp@warwick.ac.uk if you would like to apply for this funding.
аĿª½±Members’ Book: Members can sign the Members’ Book, which dates from 1865 when the Society was founded and contains signatures of members throughout the years, including Augustus De Morgan, Henri Poincaré, G.H. Hardy, and Mary Cartwright.
Workshop (Tuesday 28 March to Thursday 30 March)
Please click for a list of speakers. The programme will be announced in due course. Lectures on Tuesday 28 March will be in room MS.04 in the Mathematics Institute and lectures on Wednesday 29 and Thursday 30 March will be in room B3.03 in the Mathematics Institute.
Registration to attend the workshop is required. Please register by 28 February 2023.
There is a small amount of funding available to support PhD students. (Students supported in this way are likely to be offered accommodation in the University's Maths Houses. Each house has three bedrooms and shared bathroom and kitchen.) If you would like to apply for this support, please email Richard Sharp at R.J.Sharp@warwick.ac.uk (please include a short CV with the name of your supervisor, research topic and any other relevant information). They will give full consideration to all applications received by 27 January 2023.
Unfortunately, the MRC cannot arrange accommodation for participants who are not speakers or supported PhD students. A variety of B&B accommodation is available in Coventry, Kenilworth and Leamington Spa.

Viveka Erlandsson: Counting geodesics on surfaces
Abstract: Counting closed geodesics on hyperbolic surfaces is a classical and very active area of research. The geometric prime number theorem (first proved by Huber and then generalized by Margulis and others) state that the number of closed geodesics of length bounded by L grow exponentially in L, in fact, is asymptotic to exp(L)/L. There has been many generalizations of this result, among them there is an active theme of counting specific subsets of closed geodesics. In this talk I will survey some of these recent developments.
