Applications are currently being invited for the position of Gresham Professor of Geometry - ie the Mathematical Sciences. Gresham Professors must be able to 'communicate with a public audience who will not normally have specialist expertise in the subject, but who will be informed people with a thirst for increased knowledge'. The London Mathematical Society (LMS) and the International Mathematical Union (IMU) in association with the African Mathematics Millennium Science Initiative (AMMSI) are seeking applications for grants to support mathematics and its teaching in universities in Africa.Ìý Four mentoring partnerships are to be awarded. These will be for a duration of one year, with the possibility of extension for a further year.

Professor Cheryl Praeger (University of Western Australia) has been awarded the 2019 Prime Minister's Prize for Science. Professor Praeger received the Prize for contributions to group theory, permutation groups, combinatorics and the mathematics of symmetry. She received the Prize at a ceremony on October 16 at Parliament House in Canberra.Ìý

The London Mathematical Society (LMS) would like to extend its congratulations to Professor Praeger who became an Honorary Member of the Society in 2014.Ìý

Fiona Nixon, the аĿª½±Executive Secretary, has decided to take early retirement and will be leaving the Society on April 11th next year. Fiona has been with the Society for almost 10 years and has played a major role in enabling the Society to carry out its aims. This includes overseeing the activities at De Morgan House and making sure that everything runs smoothly behind the scenes.

It is with great sadness that the London Mathematical Society (LMS) has learned of the death of Professor Elmer Rees. Professor Rees was elected to аĿª½±membership on 18 April 1974. Over the years he served the Society in several capacities notably as Vice President (1994-1996) and as a member of аĿª½±Council. Professor Rees was also the LMS-NZMS Forder Lecturer in 1995.

After much work and effort on the part of the organisers, especially Christiane Rousseau, Chair of the IDM Governing Board, a vote is to be taken at theÌý 40th General Conference of UNESCO (November 12-27 2019) Ìý to proclaim the International Day of Mathematics on March 14th (pi day) every year.

A call for scholarship applications toÌýparticipateÌýatÌýthe 8th European Congress of Mathematics,ÌýPortorož, Slovenia, 5-11 July 2020 is now open. The 8ECM Scholarship covers a Congress fee waiver and two-star accomodation close to the conference venue. All interested students, postdoctoral researchers and senior researchers shouldÌýapply via the online registration form. Preference will be given to nationals of developing countries, as defined by the European Mathematical Society, low performing EU member states and participants fromÌýEuropean countries neighbouring the EU.

The introduction of new GCSE and A-level Mathematics qualifications has not been easy. Students receiving their A-level results today have been the test subjects for both. The аĿª½±warmly congratulates students and their teachers for their achievements in these difficult circumstances.Ìý

It is fantastic that Mathematics is still the most popular A-level and that the number of students taking Further Mathematics has grown enormously in the past decade. These successes have been achieved through the hard work of teachers and numerous organisations.Ìý

Following the consultation with the membership, further discussion by Council, and legal advice, the latest version of the revised Standing Orders received preliminary approval from the Privy Council. The document, which can be found here, was presented at the General Meeting on June 28th and prepared for a final vote at the AGM on November 29th. (Note the later date than usual.)
