The аĿª½±Teaching Mathematics as a Career (TeMaC) initiative was developed to support university mathematics departments in encouraging their students (both undergraduate and postgraduate) to consider a career teaching mathematics.
The rationale for this initiative is simple: in order to turn the tide on a lack of suitably qualified subject specialists teaching mathematics in schools, we should look to the source of this supply: university mathematics departments.
TeMaC Sub-Committee
The initiative is managed by a sub-committee of the аĿª½±Education Committee, whose main activities include:
- Developing a community of practitioners;
- Engaging mathematics and related departments in HE;
- Identifing and disseminating successful initiatives for recruitment into teaching;
- Supporting colleagues to develop new activities and initiatives;
- Gathering opinion from undergraduate students in mathematics departments;
- Monitoring recruitment data.
The full terms of reference for this sub-committee can be accessed here.
Sub-Committee members:
Jane White (Chair; Bath), Kevin Golden (UWE), M. McAlinden (аĿª½±Education Secretary; Nottingham Trent), Chris Saker (Essex), Gordon Laing (IMA; Coventry), Diane Lloyd (AMET and MMSA; Sussex).
Code of Practice
The TeMaC Sub-Committee has developed a Code of Practice that higher education mathematics departments can sign up to in order to demonstrate their commitment to encouraging students to consider teaching mathematics as a career.
The Code of Practice can be accessed here.
