The next аĿª½±Women in Mathematics Day will be held on 19 October 2018 at Newcastle University in partnership with the WISDOM group of Royal Holloway, University of London, titled: What I’ve done with my Maths Degree, and what you can do with yours.

Aimed at undergraduate, masters or PhD students in any discipline, who are interested in hearing from successful women with a mathematical background, the event will be a friendly day of talks from several women working in academia and industry, showcasing where a degree in Mathematics can lead.Ìý

Do you give mathematical talks in schools and colleges? The аĿª½±currently has vacancies for Holgate Session Leaders, and invites applications from those interested in taking part in this scheme.

The Holgate Lectures and Workshops Sessions scheme provides session leaders who are willing to give talks or run workshops on mathematical subjects to groups of students or teachers. The sessions are intended to enrich and enhance mathematical education, looking both within and beyond the curriculum.

The popularity of Mathematics at A-level continues with another increase in the number of Mathematics entries across the UK. The number of students sitting the exam is up 2.5% on last year to 97,627. This continues to be a welcome trend for Mathematics and shows that students value the skills a Mathematics qualification gives them to help fulfil their career aspirations and is excellent currency in the job market. However, the figures for AS show a significant decrease.

We are delighted to announce that the Councils of the IMA and аĿª½±have awarded the Christopher Zeeman Medal in 2018 to of University College London, for her contributions to the public understanding of the mathematical sciences.

The аĿª½±would like to warmly congratulate Professor Alice Rogers OBE on receiving the Royal Society’s Kavli Education Medal 2018, in recognition of her outstanding contributions to mathematics education.

The medal will be formally awarded at the Kavli Education Lecture 2018 and is awarded biennially to honour impact in the fields of science, mathematics or computing education. More information about the Kavli Education Medal is available .

The 2018 Louis Bachelier Prize is awarded to Pauline Barrieu (London School of Economics and Political Science). Pauline Barrieu's scientific contributions cover a wide range of topics spanning pricing, risk management and insurance. Her insightful papers are motivated by the needs of the practical world while being skillfully crafted with elegant analysis that illuminates the underlying structure of the problem in question.

The 2018 аĿª½±Prize winners were announced at the Society Meeting on Friday 29 June 2018. The аĿª½±extends its congratulations to this year’s prize winners and for their continued contributions to mathematics.

PROFESSOR KAREN VOGTMANN of Warwick University is awarded the POLYA PRIZE for her profound and pioneering work in Geometric Group Theory, particularly the study of automorphism groups of free groups.
